10 K-Pop Idols That Go Against The Typical Idol Beauty Expectations

They’re all beautiful in their own way.

The Korean entertainment industry, while slowly opening up to new types of beauty standards over time, still has a somewhat limited view on what the “typical” idol should look like. For female idols, it’s generally expected for them to be slim, pale-skinned, have big eyes and small noses, and other similar sorts of characteristics; for men, tallness and strong jawlines with masculine appeal tend to be the “norm”. Of course, this is far from how all idols look, and there is no true definition of beauty since everyone has their own traits that they find appealing. That being said, there are a number of idols who are quite different than the “typical” idol, and they all rock their visuals with confidence anyway. Here are 10 of those idols.

1. Hanse (VICTON)

Hanse isn’t afraid to show off his tattoos and piercings, which can be a bit taboo in Korean culture! He also often dresses and styles himself in very feminine ways, and looks gorgeous doing so.

2. Ren (NU’EST)

Like Hanse, Ren is also known for having a more feminine style sometimes, especially when his hair grows out. He’s so incredibly pretty!

3. Amber Liu

Amber also has a lot of tattoos (including a whole arm sleeve) and is one of the only tomboyish female idols in the K-Pop industry, which really sets her apart from the crowd!

4. Jo Kwon (2AM)

Jo Kwon has dressed up in drag numerous times (and absolutely killed it every time). He’s a huge advocate for LGBT+ rights and isn’t afraid to act and dress in a more feminine manner — not to mention, he can slay dances in stupidly high heels!

5. Hwasa (MAMAMOO)

Hwasa isn’t afraid to show off her tattoos, isn’t afraid to rock a braless look, and even though she might not fit the “standard” body type for female K-Pop idols, she’s absolutely gorgeous and has the most killer confidence.

6. G-Dragon (BIGBANG)

G-Dragon can pull off pretty much any style flawlessly. He can be very masculine sometimes, but has also worn more androgynous or feminine looks as well, and isn’t afraid to experiment with lipstick, painted nails, and other such accessories.

7. Hyolyn

Not only does Hyolyn have some large tattoos that she’s unafraid to flaunt, she’s also known for having darker skin than the typical idol, and always looks like a beautiful, sun-kissed goddess because of it.

8. Woozi (SEVENTEEN)

While Woozi might be on the shorter side when it comes to K-Pop idols, he’s actually ridiculously ripped (he can easily pick up other members of SEVENTEEN!) and has a strong masculine energy when he wants to.

9. Moonbyul (MAMAMOO)

While Moonbyul’s physical visuals are pretty typically feminine, she often dresses in suits and more “masculine” styles, which she absolutely owns.

10. Shindong (Super Junior)

While Shindong has recently worked very hard to lose weight for health reasons, he’s spent most of his years with a heavier weight than the typical male idol, but his talents made people appreciate him for his skills regardless!
