Many idols use the real names as their Instagram handles, while others use nicknames or other cute variations, but some stars’ usernames seem to be completely indecipherable—until you realize they’re actually genius. These seven idol usernames may look like keysmashes, but here are the clever meanings behind them.
IU’s Instagram username is @dlwlrma.
IU’s real name is Lee Ji Eun, and in Korean, “eun” means silver. “Geum” means gold, which earned IU the nickname “Lee Ji Geum”; “ee jigeum” also translates to “right now” in Korean. When you type “Lee Ji Geum” in Hangul (“이지금”) on an English keyboard, it spells “dlwlrma”—hence IU’s username.
2. Hyungwon (MONSTA X)
MONSTA X Hyungwon’s Instagram username is @coenffl.
The meaning behind Hyungwon’s username is similar to IU’s. Hyungwon’s family name is Chae, and his nickname in school was “Dooly” because he had chubby cheeks as a child, just like the main character from the South Korean cartoon Dooly the Little Dinosaur. When you type “Chae Dooly” in Hangul (“채둘리”) on an English keyboard, you get “coenffl.”
3. Onew (SHINee)
SHINee Onew’s Instagram username is @dlstmxkakwldrl.
Just like Onew’s username is difficult to spell, the meaning behind it is just as complex. When you type the letters “dlstmxkakwldrl” on a keyboard in Hangul, it spells “인스타마징기”, or “Instamajingki.” While “Insta” referring to Instagram is self-explanatory, “majingki” requires more decoding. Onew’s real name is Lee Jin Ki; “Majinga” is the Korean name of the popular Japanese mecha manga series Mazinger. Onew combined “Magjinga” and Jin Ki to get “majingki“, added “Insta,” and transliterated the whole thing on an English keyboard to create the final result.
4. Sehun (EXO)
EXO Sehun’s Instagram username is @oohsehun, but it used to be @xlkslb_ccdtks.
In a sweet display of affection for the group, the letters “xlkslb ccdtks” are the initials of all 12 original members in age order: Xiumin, Luhan, Kris, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O, Tao, Kai, and Sehun himself.
5. Eunha (GFRIEND)
GFRIEND Eunha’s Instagram username is @rlo.ldl.
To understand Eunha’s username, turn your head. Eunha’s real first name is Eunbi, which is spelled “은비” in Hangul. When you rotate the name 90 degrees clockwise, “은” looks like “rlo.” Meanwhile, “비” looks like “ldl.”
6. Yoojung (Weki Meki)
Weki Meki Yoojung’s Instagram username is @dbeoddl__.
Yoojung’s username is similar to IU and Hyungwon’s. Her nickname is “Yoodaengi,” or “유댕이” in Hangul. When you type this on a keyboard in English, you get “ dbeoddl.”
7. Hanse (VICTON)
VICTON Hanse’s Instagram username is @dxhxnxe.
Hanse’s real name is Do Hanse—”dxhxnxe” is just Do Hanse with every second letter swapped for an “x.” The really cute part is that his sister, Do Hanbi, made her username with the same pattern.
