LIGHTSUM Explain How They’re Different To (G)I-DLE, CLC & 4Minute

LIGHTSUM debuted last week with “Vanilla,” which already has over 5 million YouTube views.

LIGHTSUM‘s latest girl group made their debut last week, and they’re already racking up fans. In a new interview, the group’s leader explained how LIGHTSUM is different to Cube Entertainment‘s previous girl groups.

LIGHTSUM is the latest in a long line of Cube Entertainment girl groups. The company’s first female act, 4Minute, debuted in 2009.

Next came CLC, who debuted in 2015.

Just three years later, (G)I-DLE made their debut under Cube Entertainment.

Now, it’s LIGHTSUM’s turn. But while the company’s previous girl groups all had something in common, LIGHTSUM’s leader, main dancer, and lead vocal Juhyeon says this group is a little different. In a recent interview as part of the group’s debut promotions, K-Pop journalist Tamar Herman wanted to find out what sets them apart.

Cube [Entertainment] has produced many girl groups over the years. How do you feel LIGHTSUM differentiates itself from previous teams?

Juhyeon started by explaining, “Previous groups produced by Cube were a little more conceptual and intense, with strong images,” and that’s something many fans of the company can agree with. 4Minute, for example, was known for its “girl crush” concept with edgy, dance-pop hits.

While CLC debuted with a somewhat cuter sound, they soon revamped their style with EDM and trap-infused “Hobgoblin” in 2017, continuing with tracks like “Black Dress” and “Me.”

(G)I-DLE’s discography, meanwhile, has always been packed with dark and charismatic songs, from debut “Latata” to the recent “Oh My God” and “Hwaa.”

Now, LIGHTSUM is breaking the mold. Juhyeon continued by saying that LIGHTSUM is aiming to be “a friendlier kind of act,” describing the group as “more approachable, more relatable, and a little bit more intimate than previous girl groups.”

The leader finished off by noting that while past Cube Entertainment girl groups have had a strong focus on storytelling in their concepts, LIGHTSUM “hope to be more like our listeners’ friends.” LIGHTSUM’s first song, “Vanilla,” gives a taste of the down-to-earth, sweet vibes fans can expect from them in the future.
