Netizens Furious At Male YouTuber’s Cover Of BLACKPINK Jennie’s “SOLO”

His lyrics struck the wrong chord.

YouTuber Jung Hale, also known as Hale In Ocean, uploaded a male cover version of BLACKPINK Jennie‘s ‘SOLO’. He changed the lyrics to reflect what a boyfriend would reply with after hearing the original song.

He envisioned Jennie’s lyrics to be from a fictional girlfriend who decides to end their relationship after cheating on him with another man.

“Our story that you erased unilaterally
The butterflies and memories
Why are you blaming me after you ruined it?
From the beginning you were

B*tch-like solo
B*tch-like solo
Don’t act like you wanted to break up
You’re just a flirt”

After listening to his cover, many Korean netizens criticized him for “hating women”. Many demanded that he apologize to Jennie.

  • “I saw the video but you’re not going to apologize to Jennie? You basically cursed at her.”
  • “Wow… I bet Jennie was offended by this.”
  • “He’s f*cking crazy.”
  • “What kind of hatred against women is this?”
  • “These kind of lyrics come out because he’s constantly thinking about it.”
  • “He looks like the type to degrade women.”
  • “I hate the lyrics itself but looking at his expressions make me want to beat him up..ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ”

After netizens began leaving nasty comments under his video, Jung Hale closed off the captions and uploaded an apology that explained he never meant to degrade or share hatred against women.

“This ‘SOLO’ response cover isn’t about women in general. I wrote the lyrics after taking the original ‘SOLO’ lyrics a little farther to think, ‘My girlfriend suddenly told us it was over, but it turned out she was cheating?’

I’m sorry if anyone was offended by my use of the word, ‘B*tch’.

I apologize for causing a misunderstanding by using the word on YouTube, where many minors browse, but I want to emphasize that I didn’t write these lyrics to degrade women.”

As the negative response continued to pour in, Jung Hale uploaded an apology video to further emphasize his time of reflection.

“Hello, this is Hale In Ocean’s admin, Jung Hale.

First, I would like to apologize to everyone who were offended by my use of the word ‘b*tch’ in my ‘SOLO’ response cover video. Despite the sexism controversy and my true intensions, I should not have used the word on YouTube, where many children come to watch. I am deeply reflecting on my actions.

I will learn from this experience and be more careful with my choice of words in my videos, and refrain from using any words that could be sexist.

I will do my best to create a more cleaner channel.”
