And a recent broadcast of Kim Hyun Jung’s News Show dug deeper into the details behind the case.

According to CEO Gong Hye Jung of the Korean Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse, the step-mother’s biological child was the same age as the step-son who passed away.

But what surprised many viewers was the reveal that despite being the same age, her biological child weighed 40 kilograms (88 pounds) while the step-son only weighed 23 kilograms (51 pounds).

CEO Gong Hye Jung elaborated,

The average weight of a 9-year-old child is 32 kilograms (71 pounds). 23 kilograms is way too thin. Most child victims of abuse are underweight, and after working with such cases, I’ve been made to believe that food equals love.

CEO Gong Hye Jung also brought up the step-son’s biological father and questioned if he really wasn’t aware of the abuse.

The child was being brought up by his biological father and step-mother, but did the father really have no idea? They said he was away on a business trip, but I wonder how he could’ve been clueless when the boy suffered long-term abuse. Many people are curious about that.

She continued,

I haven’t spoken to them in person, so I don’t really know for certain, but there’s no way he was unaware of the long-term abuse. The biological fathers of the child abuse by step-mother cases in Ulsan and Chilgok were sentenced to 4 and 3 years in jail. A detailed investigation into the biological father is crucial.
