Stray Kids Apologize For Their Racial Insensitivity In “Finding SKZ”

It’s been an issue that STAYs have been waiting to hear them finally address.

Back in April of last year, Stray Kids‘ leader Bang Chan faced backlash from fans regarding his hairstyle. With his blond hair braided back for a special 3RACHA stage, they deemed it racially insensitive for him to wear the cultural hairstyle for a concept.

While fans asked for JYP Entertainment, the stylists, or Bang Chan himself to address the issue and apologize for hurting fans, especially Black STAYs, there were no statements or posts given—until now.

In the latest episode of their new season of Finding SKZ, each member of the group put together a costume that would make the rest of them laugh. For his attempt, Hyunjin put on a curly wig and a pair of big, red lips. Upon seeing his appearance, fans became upset, especially Black fans.

Although Hyunjin was imitating the character Go Eun Ae from the Korean cartoon Run Hani, it reminded them of racist caricatures of Black people, like the mask CLC‘s Sorn tried to brush off. They hit the nail right on the head.

Even though Go Eun Ae is a Korean ahjumma, she was reportedly based on racist stereotypes, with her wide nose, curly hair, and over-the-top lips compared to being “like an African chief’s.”

After finding out that information, fans were quick to call attention to the issue and voice their feelings about the matter. All of their concerns didn’t go unnoticed by the group. Through their official Instagram account, Stray Kids posted an apology finally addressing the racially insensitive actions that hurt fans.

As a global group, they realized how critical it is to be both accepting and respectful of every culture in the world.

“Stray Kids Everywhere All Around the World.” As you could see in our signature phrase; we, Stray Kids, always try our best to understand everyone across the world and our beloved STAY as much as possible, and as deeply as possible.

The group also pointed out the issue of discrimination against specific cultures, alluding to the current situation happening around the world regarding the movement of Black Lives Matter.

We strongly believe that everyone, no matter which culture they are in, has the right to be respected; therefore, we reject all discrimination based on any orientation and oppose all forms of inequality in the world.

Stray Kids then apologized for their racial insensitivity in the form of “stepping on a rake,” or unintentionally causing harm with their actions. They promised to be the welcoming, supportive, and respectful group that they’re meant to be.

Yet, we are still lacking in many things and we are trying our hardest to become better. We would like to apologize to anyone if we have stepped on a rake. It was never our intention but due to our lack of understanding. We promise you that we will do our best to become better Stray Kids.

The majority of fans felt the sincerity in the group’s words and appreciated that they finally spoke on a matter they’d been silent on. Still, some fans weren’t yet ready to accept the apology.

In the end, an apology should be accepted by those who it affects.
