It all started in 2017.

Not long after Suga hosted his annual birthday broadcast, his fellow rap liners RM and J-Hope wished him a happy birthday on Twitter and Instagram.

RM shared two photos of Suga captioned, “Happy birthday, Mr. Wooper.
#HappyBdayYoongi.”

It’s easy to see why RM chose this Generation II Pokemon to represent Suga…

…but newer fans might not know the origins of Suga-as-Wooper.

Five years ago, in 2017, BTS’s official Twitter account shared this photo for Suga’s 24th birthday.

The photo is scribbled with BTS’s doodles, inside jokes, and messages for the birthday boy. Suga also happens to be wearing a birthday hat that looks surprisingly similar to the real hat he wore in this year’s birthday broadcast.

In the bottom right-hand corner, Jin drew Wooper, whose Korean name is Woopa. He captioned the sketch, “Pokémon Wooper that looks like Min Yoongi.”

Jin and RM aren’t the only BTS members who have compared Suga to his Pokemon twin. In the past, Jimin named his Wooper on the Pokemon Go app “Min SUGA.”

Meanwhile, RM named his Quagsire (the Pokemon Wooper evolves into) “Gentle SUGA.” Aw!
