In 2020, Irene and Seulgi released their Monster mini album as the subunit Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi. While the mini album was packed with great songs, the track “Naughty” gained lots of attention for its complicated waacking and tutting choreography.

In a new video on STEEZY‘s YouTube channel, choreographer Spella reacted to the “Naughty” choreography. Spella created the choreography with Shim Jae Won.

Spella explained that she and Shim Jae Won both know how to tut, but he has a more classic tutting style. She changed a few of the hand and finger angles to lend a more feminine style to the “Naughty” choreography.

Spella said that “Naughty” was the first time both Irene and Seulgi attempted tutting and waacking. Although they picked up the choreography pretty quickly, she said they did have a hard time creating sharp angles with their fingers at first. While Irene and Seulgi are both incredible dancers, tutting requires lots of sharp moves to create shapes while most other dance styles tend to favor a balance of fluidity and sharpness.

Like most dance forms, it can take years to master tutting and waacking, and it can take a long time to get the basic moves down. However, Irene and Seulgi perfected the “Naughty” dance in just a few months!

Spella explained that the “Naughty” dance was very hard, especially because the song was fast-paced and the choreography involved complicated arm movements and difficult footwork.

Although the choreography was difficult, Spella and Shim Jae Won didn’t have to make any changes to it for Irene and Seulgi, apart from slightly changing some moves to make them more feminine. STEEZY’s Claydohboon explained that many K-Pop choreographies go through many different versions before they’re finalized, so it’s truly impressive that Irene and Seulgi were able to perform the original version of the “Naughty” choreography!
